I often feel quite guilty about the character of Smurt. While Dervel is dappy and Snitch is evil, Smurt is the straight-guy.Or straight-girl, if you will. Her purpose seems to be to give a dry response to a silly line, give the sensible advice and be the 'nice one'.I'm aiming to give her a little more to do in future cartoons as I feel she deserves more.
Smurt the Rat
Name:Smurf
Nicknames:Smurtum
Variety:Mink Hooded,Fancy Rat.
D.O.B. :January 2003
Date of Death:April 2004
Everyone who met Smurf loved her on sight. She was such an enchanting little girl; petite and gentle, friendly and loving. She came to me on complete chance. When I first went to but some new rats, after my lone girl Raffles died, I saw a couple of mink-self rats in the pet shop. I wanted one of those but decided that I shouldn't get two that looked the same. There were a number of mink-hoodeds also in the cage, so I said to the store assistant: "And just pick me out one of the hooded girls." So by chance, Smurf was chosen. Ironically her sister, the mink self Bronte, was always very aloof towards me but Smurf loved me on sight. I still remember how she fell asleep on my chest the first night I brought her home.
Smurf was a very easy-going rat. She was exceptionally gentle and kind, yet she still had a silly streak. One of the most noteable things about Smurf was that she always got on with other rats. When Stitch came to live with us she welcomed her with open paws - it almost seemed like she was introducing herself and offering to show her around the cage. Likewise with Derfel - she immdiately knew this shy, blonde rat needed her love and protection and she always protected him from Stitch's rages.
One of Smurf's silly obsessions was with Mcdonalds wrappers. If we crinkled a used wrapper into a bal she'd amused herself for hours chasing it around the cage and unpeeling it with her teeth.
Sadly, as with Dervel, Smurf developed a chronic cas of mycoplasmosis at a young age. It took a very fast hold on her and despite many isits to the vet there came a day very early on where we knew we couldn't keep her. When Smurf was put to sleep even the vet was upset - she adored litle Smurfie and Smurf actually liked her too. For a long time after she died, I imagined the the vet had actually decided to take her home, give her more intensive treatment, save her life and keep her for herself. And maybe that happened. Maybe not. But Smurf's death left an enormous gap in our lives, and it was the first time I ever saw my fiance cry.
Smurf was always curious when the camera homed into view...
...if not occasionally clingy.
In reality she was beautifully mis-marked
A delicate little poser.
Smurf was well behaved at all times.
A teeny-tiny baby Smurf.
Cuddling with mum.
Smurt the 'Character'
As I've mentioned above, it can be quite hard given Smurt something to do. She is, in many ways, a 'background rat'. She's the voice of reason, the person who gives the 'dry wit' lines, and I've never known for anyone to site her as their favourite character. Which is a shame really, as Smurt is a nice character. But, as they say, nice guys finish last.
